Jan Saudek, urodzony w Pradze, to jeden z najbardziej znanych europejskich fotografików.

Zaczął interesować się fotografią już jako nastolatek – w 1950 roku kupił swój pierwszy aparat firmy Kodak. Niedługo później rozpoczął pracę w drukarni, która trwała aż do 1983 roku. W 1963 roku, w Pradze, odbyła się pierwsza wystawa prac Saudka. 

Znanym, obecnie już kultowym zdjęciem z czasu młodości artysty jest słynne „Życie”, czyli intymne ujęcie dorosłego mężczyzny kołyszącego dziecko.

Jan Saudek zajmował się również rysunkiem i malarstwem. Od 1977 roku zaczął barwić oraz ręcznie malować wywołane fotografie. Baśniowe zdjęcia przywodzą na myśl prace fotografów erotycznych połowy XIX wieku, a także prace malarskie XX wieku. Które? Interpretacja otwarta.

W 1972 roku pojawił się najbardziej charakterystyczny motyw w jego twórczości – odrapana ściana piwnicy. Zdezelowana powierzchnia to tło dla wielu zachwycających aktów. Pozują mu przeważnie kobiety – stare i młode, szczupła i otyłe, zdrowe i chore… Choć postaci są dalekie od stereotypowych kanonów urody, to twórca zawsze potrafi wydobyć życiowe piękno.

Tematy często spotykane w pracach twórcy to wspomnienia z dzieciństwa, dorastanie, jak również skomplikowane przeplatanie się damskiego i męskiego pierwiastka. Fotografie, które zaprezentujemy na wystawie „Ściana natchnienia” ukazują skąpo odziane postaci pozujące zazwyczaj na tle wspomnianej w tytule ekspozycji ściany.

Co ciekawe, o artyście urodzonym w Pradze było wpierw głośno na Zachodzie a nie w jego własnym kraju, ze względu na to, iż był bojkotowany i „uciszany” przez komunistyczne władze Czechosłowacji. Jeden z epizodów surowo działającej cenzury to zatrzymanie przez policję negatywów jego fotografii w 1987 roku. Saudek był przez lata zmuszony do pracy w (dosłownie i w przenośni) piwnicy. Stało się tak, ponieważ nie mógł sobie pozwolić na ryzyko złapania przez tajną policję. Dlatego jego dzieła dotykające problemu korupcji politycznej, wolności czy seksualności owiane były tabu i niejednokrotnie zakazane ze względu na wówczas kontrowersyjne kwestie.

Mistrz fotografii cieszy się doprawdy ogromną popularnością zarówno za granicą, jak też w Czechach. To niebywałe, iż powstały już dwa filmy o artyście: „Jan Saudek: Prague Printemps” z 1990 oraz „Jan Saudek: Bound by Passion”.

Indywidualne wystawy Jana Saudka odbyły się na całym świecie. Prezentowane były m. in. w paryskim Centre Georges Pompidou czy w Metropolitan Museum of Art w Nowym Jorku.

Dzieła artysty znajdują się w najważniejszych kolekcjach w Europie, Stanach Zjednoczonych i Azji.

A few words about Jan Saudek

Jan Saudek, born in Prague, is one of the best known European photographers.

His interest in photography began when he was a teenager – he bought his first Kodak camera in 1950. Soon after this event Saudek had started working in a printing house; this activity continued until 1983. In 1963 the first exhibition of his photos took place in Prague.

A shot from the time of Saudek’s youth, depicting a man intimately cradling a baby (titled “Life”), can be nowadays defined as iconic and crucial in the history of photography.

The artist was also engaged in drawing and painting. In 1977 he began to color and hand paint developed photographs. Dreamy, fairy-tale-like pictures are reminiscent of the erotic photographs from the 19th century, as well as oil paintings from the 20th century. Which artworks you may ask… Free interpretation.

In 1972, the most characteristic motif in his artistic work appeared – a dilapidated cellar wall. The damaged surface is the backdrop for many delightful nudes. He chooses women of all sizes, ages and types of beauty to be his models. Young, old, skinny, curvy, ill or healthy… Even though the characters are far from stereotypical canons of beauty, Jan Saudek is able to bring out the beauty of truth. In his photographs he often touches topics like memories from childhood, adolescence, and intricate interweaving of the feminine and masculine. The artworks that will be presented at the „Wall of Inspiration” exhibition show scantily clad figures, usually posing against the background of the wall mentioned in the title of the exposition.

Interestingly, the artist born in Prague was first known in the West and not in his own country, because he was boycotted and silenced by the communist authorities of Czechoslovakia. One of the episodes of strict censorship was the seizure of the negatives of his photographs by the police in 1987. Saudek was forced to work in a hideout for years. This was because he did not want to be caught by the secret police. That is why his works dealing with the problem of political corruption, freedom or sexuality were often banned due to those controversial issues.

The master of photography enjoys great popularity both abroad and in the Czech Republic. It’s truly unprecedented that two films about the artist have already been made: „Jan Saudek: Prague Printemps” from 1990 and „Jan Saudek: Bound by Passion”.

Jan Saudek’s individual exhibitions have been held all over the world. They were presented, among others, at the Georges Pompidou Center in Paris and the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York.

The artist’s works are included in the most important collections in Europe, in the United States and in Asia.
